Best Defence was established in 1997. The main purpose was to provide violence and aggression training within the NHS. The program not only had the provision of a tutorial, but also contained two physical session's for those in higher risk areas such as accident and emergency departments and ambulance services personnel.

Special packages for security staff were added in 1998. This additional phycal training was aimed at containing the most violent people until the situation could either be de-escalated or the person was handed over to the police.

The term management of aggression was changed to Conflict Resolution when the NHS Counter Fraud and Security Management Service (CFSMS) was launched. In December 2003 the Secretary of State launched the strategic document 'A Proffessional Approach to Managing Security in the NHS' www.cfsms.nhs.uk. The key aim of this strategy is the delivery of an environment for those who use or work in the NHS that is properly secure, so that the highest possible standard of clinical care can be made available to patients. Best Defence tutors attended the NHS course in 2004/2005, and Best Defence have now been awarded contracts to train over 1500 NHS staff by the end of 2005.
